our mission

Indivisible Oklahoma is a grassroots organization with a mission of progressive activism dedicated to the principles of justice, compassion, equity, and honesty.

Core Principles

  1. Freedom of speech and a free press are the foundation of a functional and vibrant democracy.
  2. Ensuring healthcare for all is a moral obligation of a good and just society.
  3. High quality and well-funded public education facilitates equality, economic security, and is critical to the future of America.
  4. A reasonable path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants is the responsibility of a compassionate and just nation.
  5. Termination of a pregnancy is a deeply personal and often complex medical decision in which the government should not be involved.
  6. We believe in the right to a living wage and that corporate welfare widens the gap between the rich and the poor.
  7. Every person is equal; we reject discrimination for any reason.
  8. There is scientific evidence of climate change caused by human activity. We support government-imposed protections of the environment and for human health and safety.
  9. Criminal justice reform is overdue. Profit for incarcerating people is immoral.
  10. Transparency in government is lacking. We hold our elected officials accountable for their actions and inaction.
  11. The separation of church and state ensures religious freedom for all and is key to protecting our democracy.
  12. We support the Second Amendment AND believe commonsense gun laws are needed to protect the public.
  13. Every person should be treated with dignity and respect.
  14. A compassionate and just society does not tolerate brutality or cruelty to people, or animals.
  15. Well educated voters are key to electing more just, compassionate, and honest leaders.

A REFLECTION

OUR HISTORY

Indivisible Oklahoma held its first meeting in late January 2017, following the return of 50 women from Oklahoma, who traveled by bus to attend the first Women’s March in Washington, D.C. Inspired by this event and and their mutual commitment to social justice and equity, the decision was made to follow the lead of the organizers of the national Indivisible group, Ezra Levin and Leah Green, by forming a state group.

In April of 2017, the first Indivisible Oklahoma “empty” town hall was held at Rose State College with over 2000 attendees. While congressional leaders did not choose to accept our invitation, local leaders from Sierra Club, CAIR Oklahoma, and formed a panel and members of the audience spoke on LBGTQ rights, Healthcare, and more.

Over the next four years, many other rallies and meetings followed, while over 15 local community groups were also formed. Indivisible Oklahoma members actively worked to support the 802 state petition for Medicaid Expansion in 2019, which was successfully passed by vote in June 2020. Voter registrations, Reproductive Rights rallies, Pride parade events, and community support were all a part of these years as well. Our membership grew to over 6K during this time.

With the next administration, came a welcome reprieve for some, but activism continued in raising awareness of legislative issues, the Living Wage petition effort, Rally for Ukraine, and more.

Following the November 2024 election, Indivisible Oklahoma leaders and members again kicked into full gear. Both state and local group memberships have risen by over 2K in the first quarter, and are continuing to grow daily. Local monthly meetings in both Tulsa and Oklahoma City have seen over 100 in attendance and new rural chapters are once again holding weekly meetings. Support is available for anyone wishing to organize and lead a local Oklahoma chapter in their area.
